Sobremesa: The Art of Lingering at the Table

Have you ever heard of the Spanish word "sobremesa"? It literally translates to "over the table," but it means so much more than that. In Spanish culture, sobremesa is the time spent lingering at the table after a meal, engaging in conversation and enjoying each other's company.

Sobremesa is a beloved tradition in Spain and other Spanish-speaking countries, and it is an essential part of the dining experience. It is a time to relax, unwind, and connect with friends and family. It is a time to savor the flavors of the food and the warmth of the company. In our fast-paced world, where we are always rushing from one thing to the next, sobremesa is a reminder to slow down and savor the moment. It is an invitation to put aside our screens and devices, and to engage in face-to-face conversation. It is a chance to strengthen our bonds and cultivate relationships.

I wanted to take Sombremesa as a creative prompt to design for, and started ideating using a bauhaus motif quickly building this inspiration board:

Sobremesa may not be a word in English, but its meaning is universal. We can all benefit from taking the time to linger at the table and enjoy the company of others. So the next time you sit down for a meal, make an effort to extend the experience beyond the food. Engage in conversation, listen to others, and savor the moment. Who knows? You might discover the joy of sobremesa.
